전치사(Preposition)는 명사, 대명사, 혹은 동사와 다른 단어나 구를 연결하는 문법적 요소입니다. 전치사는 위치, 방향, 시간, 수단, 원인 등을 나타내며 문장에서 명사나 대명사의 위치를 나타내는 역할을 합니다.
해외 여행을 위한 영어 공부 - 문법 정리 6편에 이어서 7편(마지막)은 전치사에 대한 내용입니다.
해외 여행용 영어 능력에는 당연히 말하기(Speaking)과 듣기(Listening)가 중요하겠지만, 기본적인 문법 실력까지 갖춘다면 영어를 듣고 말하는 능력도 훨씬 향상될 것입니다. 그래서 아주 기본적인 영문법을 최대한 간결하게 정리해보았습니다.
제가 매우 간결하게 요약해 놓았기 때문에, 영어 문법을 한 번이상 공부한 적이 있지만 오래되었거나 헷갈린게 있으신 분들에게 더 도움이 될 거라 생각됩니다. 자신의 실력에 따라서 간단히 훑어보거나, 직접 노트에 옮겨적으며 한번더 외우셔서 자기 것으로 만들길 바랍니다 :)

7. 전치사
7.1. 시간
7.1.1. at / on / in
1. at + 초, 분, 시 (시간적으로 짧은 지점)
ex) at 10.30 / at 8 o’clock / at midnight / at the weekend / at Christmas
2. on + 날짜, 요일, 기념일
ex) on 16 July / on Saturday / on New Year’s Day
3. in + 월, 연도, 계절
ex) in April / in 2011 / in summer
예외) in the morning / in the afternoon / in the evening (주의: on Monday morning)
4. in + 시간 = ~까지, ~이내에
ex) in five minutes / in a few days / in six weeks / in two years
ex) Hurry! The train leaves in five minutes.
ex) Bye! I’ll see you in a few days.
※ 다음 단어들 앞에서는 at/on/in을 쓰지 않는다.
- this ~ ex) this morning / this week 등
- last ~ ex) last August / last week 등
- next ~ ex) next Monday / next week 등
- every ~ ex) every day / every week 등
7.1.2. from ~ to ~ / until / since / for
1. from 시간 to 시간 = ~부터 ~까지
= from 시간 until 시간
ex) We lived in Japan from 1992 to 2001.
2. until + 시간 = ~까지
= till 시간
※ 질문비교
ex1) How long will you be away? Until Monday.
ex2) When are you coming back? On Monday.
3. since + 과거의 한 시점 = ~이래로 (지금까지) / 현재완료에서 주로 사용
ex) She has learned English from him since June.
ex) It has been raining since I arrived.
4. for + 기간 : ~동안 / 현재완료에서 사용
ex) Gary stayed with us for three days.
ex) They’ve been married for ten years.
7.1.3. before / after / during, while
1. before/after : 전치사 & 접속사 역할
- before/after + 명사(동명사) / to부정사는 X
ex) I always have breakfast before going to work.
- before/after + 절(S+V)
ex) They went home after they did the shopping.
2. during/while/for : 각각 다름
- during + 명사
ex) We didn’t speak during the meal.
- while + 절(S+V)
ex) We didn’t speak while we were eating.
- for + 기간
ex) We didn’t speak for 1 hour
7.2. 장소
7.2.1. at / on / in
1. at + 장소 (점)
ex) at the bus stop / at the door / at the traffic lights / at her desk
ex) at home / at work / at school / at the station / at the airport / at a concert / at a party
2. on + 장소 (위에 놓여있는 것/ 붙어있는 것 상상)
ex) on a shelf / on the floor / on a wall / on the ceiling
ex) on a bus / on a train / on the first floor / on the way to work
3. in + 장소 (공간의 안쪽)
ex) in a room / in a car / in the water / in a town / in Brazil
ex) in bed / in hospital / in the sky / in the world / in a newspaper / in a picture
7.2.2. to 와 in / at
1. to : ~로
go/come/return/walk to ~
ex) We’re going to London on Sunday.
ex) The bus is going to the airport.
2. in/at : ~에
be/stay/live/do something in/at ~
ex) Emily is in Korea.
ex) The bus is at the airport.
- get to + 장소
ex) What time did you get to the hotel?
- arrive in + 국가, 도시
ex) They arrived in England last week.
- arrive at + 그 외의 장소들
ex) What time did you arrive at the hotel?
7.3. 위치
7.3.1. 위치하는
- behind : 뒤에
- next to = beside = by : 옆에
- in front of : 앞에
- opposite : 맞은편에
- upper : 위에
- under : 아래에
- above : (간격을 두고) 위에
- below : (간격을 두고) 아래에
7.3.2. 향하는
- to : ~까지
- from : ~부터
- in : 안으로
- out : 밖으로
- into : (영역) 안으로
- out of : (영역) 밖으로
- on : (바깥쪽에서) 위쪽으로
- off : (위쪽에서) 바깥쪽으로
- away : 바깥쪽으로
- back : 돌아와서
- up : 위로 (향하는)
- down : 아래로 (향하는)
- over : (위로) 너머에
- under : (아래로) 너머에
- through : 관통하여
- round : 돌아서, 빙 둘러서
- along : 따라서
- across : 가로질러

- fed up with : ~에 질린
- full of : ~로 가득 찬
